CBD vs. THC: What's the Difference?

As the industry legally using hemp and other products that stem from cannabis grows, so does the curiosity of bystanders. Understanding that CBD and THC are two different things is the first place to start. Below, we have created a beginner’s guide to understanding the world of CBD and full spectrum hemp oil.

Chemical Structure

CBD is extracted from hemp or cannabis. Legal full spectrum hemp oil must contain 0.3 percent or less of THC. Both compounds, CBD and THC interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system but have very different effects. The molecular composition of both compounds are the same, but the atoms are arranged differently, generating the differing effects on the body. These effects are called the psychoactive components and range between the use of CBD and THC. CBD is clinically shown to help with anxiety, depression, and seizures, and doesn’t produce the same high as one would achieve from THC. The medicines bind with the CB1 receptors in the brain differently as well. CBD binds to the receptors are very weak, but need minuscule amounts of THC to generate the correct connection without experiencing the euphoria or sedation. THC binds well to the receptors, which produce a “high” or sense of euphoria.

Side Effects and Benefits

CBD and THC are known to contain many of the same medicinal benefits, but the side effects vary. Both are used to aid various conditions such as pain, anxiety, and nausea. CBD is also understood to help with seizures, mental disorders, migraines, and inflammation.

A few of the temporary side effects of CBD and full spectrum hemp oil are fatigue, diarrhea, appetite changes, and slight dizziness. THC produces side effects such as coordination problems, dry mouth, redness of the eyes, and memory loss. Neither compound is fatal, but the differentiation in effects is due to the psychoactive properties listed before.

Legality

Each state has different laws regarding the medicinal and recreational use of CBD and THC. However, these laws are evolving regularly. In the December 2018 Farm Bill, full spectrum hemp oil was legalized by Congress. Understanding that the percentage of THC in CBD is a big component on legalization and which state you buy, and reside in are some of the most important topics to look into when considering purchasing CBD.
