Is CBD Addictive?

Not too long ago, CBD or cannabidiol was regarded as something that gave you a high, much like its cousin THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. CBD is the key ingredient in premium full-spectrum hemp oil. It is just one cannabinoid of 80 that exists naturally in marijuana. Many studies have demonstrated that CBD does not cause a high and can be used for therapeutic purposes, especially for pain and inflammation relief. This has led many scientists to wonder about the many possibilities of cannabidiol.

Is CBD Addictive?

Let’s examine the differences between CBD and THC and whether CBD is habit-forming.

CBD vs. THC

Most people have the mistaken belief that CBD and THC are the same. They’re not! The only relationship they share is that they are both present in cannabis. In fact, CBD is the second most concentrated ingredient after THC. This is why people expect CBD to elicit psychoactive effects.

High-grade CBD oil is sourced from the hemp plant. It doesn’t cause a “high” or any other psychoactive effects associated with marijuana.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is responsible for giving that characteristic ‘high’ feeling, which is felt with cannabis. THC is the primary ingredient that causes psychoactive effects such as forgetfulness and pleasure.

Does CBD Make You Feel High?

As noted earlier, CBD does not cause intoxication. It does make you feel relaxed and uplifted. The World Health Organization states that “any substance that affects the mental processes should be considered psychoactive.” Since CBD does alleviate pain and makes the patient feel better, it can be labeled as psychoactive.

However, many clinical research studies have found that even when high doses of CBD were taken, the same psychoactive effects are not felt as those found with THC.

Can CBD be Addictive?

Before answering this question, let’s consider how CBD interacts with the body. When you take a dose of high-quality CBD without THC, this chemical inserts itself into special receptors in your cells and body tissues, called CB1 and CB2. They are a part of the endocannabinoid system, or ECD. This is another word for neurotransmitters. They are capable of regulating many functions in the body, such as controlling pain, pleasure, and appetite.

THC, on the other hand, causes the addictive state that often occurs with smoking marijuana. THC has a negative effect on the CB1 brain receptor and the CB2 immune system receptor. This combined impact often leads to addiction.

CBD oil doesn’t trigger the same ‘high’ caused by THC because the body is capable of maintaining a balance through its CBD receptors. Taking CBD oil does not cause euphoria or trigger intoxication because CBD doesn’t engage with either the CB1 or CB2 receptors.

CBD oil can relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Joint pain

CBD oil may also provide relief from anxiety and depression.
