One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly found cancers in American women, and it is estimated that in 2020, approximately 30% of all new cancer diagnoses in women will be found in their breast. According to The National Breast Cancer Foundation, in 2020 an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, as well as 48,530 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. An estimated 42,170 women are expected to die from breast cancer this year in the U.S. alone.
Although these stats may seem disheartening, it is important to note that there are over 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, continually improving treatment options, and increased awareness. - Wear pink: Participate in the national initiative to wear pink for breast cancer on the 18th of October.
- Help a cancer patient: Find a way to make their life easier. Rather than asking how you can help, tell them how you plan to.
- Educate yourself and others: Talk about family history and preventative measures that can be taken, like self-checking for abnormalities and mammograms.
